Abstract

There is a growing demand of day care provision as the social activities of married women has become more prevalent recently.
Since the number established day nurseries are far short of the demand, Family Day Care Programs were encouraged as an alternative by the Government.
In Seoul, there are 4 institutions providing the training programs for Family Day Care Providers.
This study was conducted to provide the basic data for the legisteration of Family Day Care and to investigate the following questions.
"What are the educational curriculum and present situations of the training institutions of Family Day Care Providers?"
"What are the educational Contents which are also included in the nursine curriculum?"
"Is it suitable for nurses to be professional man powers of Day Care Providers?"
Data was collected from the four training institutions of Family Day Care Providers and from the Korean Women¢¥s Development Institute which provides a model educational program for Family Day Care Personnel.
The analysis was done in comparison of educational programs of four training institutions, with those of the Korean Women¢¥s Development Institute (KWDI), a Junior Nursing College.
The Results of the analyses are as follows:
1) There are four training institutions of Family Day Care Providers in Seoul. Total number of day care providers completed training were 230, and 217 were in the process of training as of Jan. 1987.
2) Qualification for training was based on the criteria suggested by the KWDL The period and total number of education differed by the institutions. There is a program consisted of 62 hours of training, 41.3% of total hours (150 hours) suggested by the KWDI, which may allow to produce under-qualified r -sonnel for Day Care Providers. 3) Only one institution among four has a comparable program with which suggested by the KWDI, the remaining three institutions differed widely, regarding the courses offered and class hours, according to their situations and the objectives of the institutions. 4) When the required professional courses of the nursing program were compared with the day care training program, all the courses offered in the day care program were also offered in the nursing program except the courses of Principle of Preschool Child Education, Principle of Child Welfare, and Practice of Play Guidance. 5) Since the functions of day care are protection and nurturance, rather than education, of the preschool children, and nurses are equipped with the knowledge of health care management, it is desirable for the nurses to be professional man powers of day care providers. Based on the above results the following suggestions are made: 1) It is deemed necessary to have legal standards about the qualification and the training program of the day care providers. 2) It is desirable for the nurses to be professional day care providers for the quality day care. 3) It is recommended to review the policy to certify those who have completed nursing curriculum as day care providers. 4) It is suggested to study, under the auspice of Korean Nurses Association, to utilize surplus nurses as professional Family Day Care Providers.
